Death Analysis: Yu Kanda (D.Gray-Man)

 Background

"You're naive. We're destroyers, not saviours."

The Holy War, two sides of the world colliding across many ages, exorcists and noah. Countless have died in between, civilians included. There was a time where Yu Kanda, one of the many accomodators from the Black Order along his wife, Alma gave everything against the Akuma in their side of this war, dying in the process.

But this wasn't the end.

The darkest secrets of the Black Order had been revealed upon, a false facade of so called saviors. Black Order's Asian Branch started thanks to head of the Chang family and known former scientist, Zui Mei Chang a project of Artificial Apostles, known as 2nd Generation Exorcists. The project in summarize, was to create special bodies with a regenerative properties for their warriors to hold against Akuma's deadliest ability, Dark Matter. This wasn't an easy process, as not only it required the creation of their bodies, but as well directly force the Innocence in them, Innocence from fallen apostles.

Kanda was taken back to life thanks to this method, but with no real memories of back then. He first met with a curious purple haired kid after getting out of a liquid tube in a laboratory, his name was Alma Karma, both of them really didn't went well with the other, having often fights due Alma's kind nature and Yu's being a lot more irritating and serious, but if something called Yu's attention over anything else, was a mysterious woman who at times he could see with many lotus flowers at her surroundings, he wasn't sure who she was but always felt an odd connection.

Things for Kanda and Alma weren't easy, their labs experiments always involved testing on their tolerance and pain resistance to get them ready for Innocence, making their lifes a daily torture yet having each other for the very least. Until one day, by chance both of them found the dark reality behind their creations, Kanda being totally aware now of the fact he used to be someoene else, and Alma discovering the bodies of former exorcists. This absolutely destroying their mind, but going on rampage, Alma started a carnage on Black Order's Asian Branch causing many looses to the Chang family. In a difficult moment, Kanda had to take action and blatantly murdered Alma.

This traumatic event, changed his life forever, but he wasn't alone in this pain in the Black Order as he started to create bonds with different people from it, like Noise Marie, General Froi Tiedoll and Lenalee Lee. Arrogant, rude, cold but very brute, Kanda became one AND if not, the strongest soldier from all of the Black Order. Having a single mission in all of his life, to find that mysterious woman with the lotus.

And perhaps, overcome many of his challenges in life with the help of one kind, moody and white haired beansprout exorcist, Allen Walker.

Equipment and Abilities

Innocence

Innocence is a power of holy origin that dates back 7,000 years to ancient civilizations, more specifically it originated from the cube. There are hundreds of innocence around the world, some of which have been used in "Anti-Akuma" weapons that allow precisely the elimination of "Dark Matter" users, be they Akuma or members of the Noah clan.

Unlike the evil attributes of Dark Matter (damage to the soul, poisoning, disintegration of the organic), Innocence is capable of purifying every soul it hits, freeing them from eternal torment.

Innocence is an energy out of this world said by Tyki, its power is such that it can generate unexplained events, it can even act on its own at times and generate energy displays that are capable of stunning, burning and killing normal human beings.

Mugen

Mugen is Kanda's Equipment-Type Innocence, a long sword which has changed around 3 times in the series. Kanda has a good level of swordsmanship due his near militar training in the Black Order, so combined with his strenght it makes him a deadly foe for the Akuma. Being able to chop across entire hordes of them with next to no issue.

Just like any sword, it used to break with relative ease if being used too much. But Kanda managed to get around that problem in two situations:

Golem

Golems are small robots designed by scientists from the world of D.Gray-Man, they are normally used to send messages between exorcists and assist in location. Their systems allow the users to contact with Headquarters, they only recognize the user's voice as a security method.

Healing Seal

Developed by Tui Chang, the regeneration system implemented in the Second Generation Exorcists is a method developed specifically to be able to endure Innocence in a forced manner. The regeneration time being around 580 seconds.

Any kind of broken joint, sliced joint, blood loss, lethal virus or even attacks that directly affect memory will be healed in a matter of seconds. Although this has a cost, and that is that even if he helps too much in combat, if Kanda uses his Illusions that require his life force, the regeneration deteriorates to stratospheric points.

1st Illusion

Kanda's first move after giving a single swing , 1st Illusion creates "Netherworld Creatures", fish looking creatures which hunt and pierce the opponent right on. It can spread across big distances, as shown when able to kill many Akuma in one move.

2nd Illusion

His 2nd move, Kanda is able to generate a second blade entirely done of energy. Second Illusion is able to get him a better mobility in fights, being able to strike faster, and it's energy can also be shaped in the form of a wings shield.

3rd Illusion

"Ascending Flower" or Triple Illusion is Kanda's 3rd technique, in this form Kanda's pupils gain 3 dots and his vein marks become more notable. This form works as an enhacement of both speed and strenght at the cost of Yu's life force and regeneration abilities.

4th Illusion

Is not explained on detail what this Illusion makes, but apparently it keeps boosting Kanda's strenght and speed for more life force. Able to far surpass Alma's reactions, an 2nd Generation Exorcist in the same level of his.

5th Illusion

The fifth illusion is on simple words, Kanda's Super Saiyan form. In this his hair turns slightly purple, here his life force is used to the maximum, reaching a critical and risky point for his soul and body, as could end up literally crumbling into dust with not a chance to regenerate as fast. Mugen acquires the same form that he had when Kanda was a boy, and with this he acquires abysmal strength and speed. Being able to match Allen's most powerful technique and surpass it without any problem, being able to resist any attack from Alma, and being able to almost kill Allen.

Feats

General

"This world is dark and it's so hard to breathe... but in this instant, when I laughed along with you, I felt that breathing just got a little more easier."

Strenght

Speed

Durability

Weaknesses

Kanda can come off as an idiot for most times, that's why Allen often calls him "Bakanda", he's not exactly the smartest for some things despite being a really good warrior. As well, is to remember that despite his regeneration being unbeliavably good, it has limits considering it drains Yu's own life force and has an actual time for it to act, specially 5th Illusion is very dangerous to reach, the effects of having transformed to it included literally crumbling into dust and after it, weakened the effect of it allowing Yu to be affected by things like drinking alcohol.

Scaling

Allen Walker

Rivals, friends, acting just like a married couple. Allen and Kanda may often verbally fight, but they are surprisingly very even in their strenght one to the other. And is that there's not a single doubt Kanda should be above Allen currently, as Kanda almost managed to literally kill him.

Lenalee Lee

Both of them go along surprisingly well, both worry a lot about each other. So they are never seen fighting each other, homever Kanda should be at least on a similar level to her, even more after Crystalization shenanigans which both own.

Lavi

Both are pretty powerful exorcists on their own, homever it was shown back on Noah's Ark arc the difference between their power, and is that Kanda has no issue pulling better feats than Lavi. Besides, Allen has fought Lavi before and pretty even.

Tyki Mikk

They haven't went all out in their fights, but they should be comparable at the very least. As Kanda has represented a huge deal to Noah Family already as shown with his fight against Skin. And General Level threats like Cross managed to stop his Awakened Form.

Generals

His insane strenght has always been a matter of admiration by Black Order's Generals, specifically Tiedoll who pretty much confirmed it. At the moment, not all have feats but this tiering grants Kanda an enormous upscaling from most feats and statements.

Summarize

I remember being invested in him back then, his design and AMVs gave me a neat vibe. But after checking all of the series, I found out one of my my favorite characters, even more than the protagonist surprisingly. Kanda is perhaps the best character to use from the series on versus content anyways, his arc is pretty much complete and his moveset is not getting more updates at all, since his limits have been established and surpassing them would be a little too out of place.

His stats are definetly hitting the Large Island-Small Country tierings. Would be weird that with so much upscaling and Illusions, Kanda didn't multiplied the value of 8 gigatons from his base feat.

And as debatable as may be. I find easier to believe he's MHS, more specifically Mach 213/ above with multipliers. I don't see the issue with considering Skin's thunders are lightning.

Advantages

  • The only character from the verse who's character arc and abilities are basically done.
  • Simple and fun moveset, not too difficult to understand.
  • Funny personality, you don't wanna mess with him.

Disadvantages

  • Regeneration is not perfect, can be outlasted and more when using extreme forms.
  • His Illusions don't really state the amount of times they multiply his strenght and speed.
Special thanks, to Rina and Mikhail for their calculations. They are the best homies ever and cannot really thank them enough. They make this project of versus a lot more interesting! More then is for an obscure franchise like this.

Cool match-up!

Yu Kanda vs Kanzaki Kaori (D.Gray-Man vs A Certain Magical Index)

Both of them are stoic and ruthless sword users, who belong to a morally questionable occultism organization.

Despite their unholy strenght and power, they have never been proud of it due the bad experiences this has caused in their life.

This power comes directly from their reincarnation factor, Kanda used to be a former exorcist which memories and Innocence got taken into a new powerful body. Kanzaki was one of the many lucky to be born as a Saint, which owns the structure of Jesus Christ's body.

One of their main motives of fighting involving the traumas, relates to the people they felt the biggest sympathy with, namely Alma Karma and Index, who suffered some of the worst things this organizations could do.

But thanks to the help of the kind protagonist despite their seeming first bad impression, they own a major debt to them.

Outside the connections, this idea feels really fitting for both and is that the giant sword clash is there, but there's also the strenght and speed factor due them being showcased as nuclear threats. Their abilities also match a lot, they get a counter for basically anything and the transformation moment is also there, getting a real good clash of Breaker of God against Fifth Illusion.

Want to read a fight of it? Go check this, is worth it.
